Canaries in a Corn Mine

This is a collection of photos currently on display at Lakeside Street Coffee House in Madison, WI.

Dave is invested in birds as ecologically necessary intelligent beings - interacting with each other and their natural environment. The series attempts to visualize their struggles to survive - whether in feeding, fighting, courtship, or parenting - with intensity, pathos, beauty, and humor.

Dave is among a growing number of citizens alarmed by the decreasing number of birds worldwide. He was horrified to read a recent article* in the journal Science that shows an ongoing acceleration of population loss in the Midwest - including of course Wisconsin. This accelerated loss is seen most in areas of intense farming activity like deforestation, pesticide, and fertilizer use. Apparently, the soil and water in and around our Dane County farmland may not be so healthy for us and our ecosystem.

Perhaps we should think of our beautiful local birds as…
